"A Little Impulsive"

The newest addition to the Impulsive team is "A Little Impulsive". This is a 148" wheel base Jr Dragster with the body and chassis made in 2002 by Nervo Coggin. The engine is a Briggs and Stratton "Raptor" motor that runs on Alcohol.

This small motor by team standards is not your Dads lawn mower engine. This Alcohol burning aluminum motor makes 10 plus horsepower, and can move this car up to 68 miles per hour on the 1/8 mile asphalt track. The previous owner ran very consistently and won many trophies before retiring from drag racing and moving on to two wheeled entertainment. We plan on running this car at Sand drag events including Avenal and Tulare. The low stance of the car will prohibit running in the sand at Oceano Dunes but we might get a few practice runs near the beach.

The existing setup may be to fast for the age brackets in Sand Drag racing. The car will run 1/8 mile in 10 seconds so 300 feet in 10 seconds will take some adjustments. I will be experimenting with detuning the car to possibly run gasoline until the brackets will allow a faster car. Jonathan and Samantha are ready to go and look forward to their first competition at Avenal in September.

The car is very simple with the single cylinder motor turning a torque converter. As the rpm's increase the springs on the torque converter are overcome by the centripetal forces and allow the pulley size to increase. As the pulley size increases the car speed is increased. This is old school technology but the interest in Jr Drag racing has increased the parts available to the racing enthusiasts. The effect is like a variable speed automatic transmission. We hope to transfer this knowledge to allow the car to run in the sand (or dirt) race tracks.

Future upgrades will include a change of color to Team Red with appropriate markings, and paddle tires for the dirt tracks. If the track speeds get out of control we may have to add a rear wing to provide the proper down force to keep us on track!

Sand Drag racing is a family sport and can involve everyone who wants to race.
